Watching your site climb to the top of Google is a goal that every web owner would love to reach but sometimes seems out of reach.  On the other hand if your website is in a very competitive market that focuses in lets say “Local Internet Marketing” now you need to prove to Google and the other major search engines that your site is an authority leader in your targeted market.

A major mistake many new web site owners make while in the development stages of their soon to be newly implemented website is not hiring a Web Marketing Firm to work side-by-side with your Web Designer.  Many new site owners get dissuaded from generating back links to their website either because of lack of knowledge, finances, or time.

Whilst they are important to overall ranking, it is always useful to bear in mind that it is possible to be ranked number one on for your chosen keyword or phrase without a single back link recognized by Google.

Useful content – One of the easiest ways of getting people to link to your site is to put useful content on it.  Once news of this got around, non-competing websites will want to link to yours to share this with their visitors. A site hiring bikes could have a number of cycle routes in Yorkshire available as downloads.

Links from suppliers – Ask your key suppliers if they would provide links to your site.
When contacting your suppliers to request this, it is a good idea to supply them with the appropriate image for linking.  For example the bike hire site would supply the tag “Bike hire Yorkshire” with the hyperlink to the appropriate page. If you leave the choice of this to your supplier, there is the danger that they will just use your company name with a hyperlink to your site and you will lose an opportunity to improve your site ranking.  Entry into this will not only increase your back-links and help search engine optimization, but will also provide additional direct traffic from users of this website.

DMOZ – With a Page Rank of 8, this directory is often referenced by many search engines.

Sites are added quickly. This site has a Page Rank of 4 and has been around since 1996.
Site submissions are added fairly quickly.  Adding you site to them is not a guarantee of good search rankings but it will certainly help.

Tip: Do a Link Popularity analysis on your competitors that are above you in the rankings and see where their links are coming from.

Paid directory entries – Many commercially run directories will offer a range of services to promote your website.  We list a few of these below.  A basic company entry with a link to your website is free.

As well as these there are a score of business directories such as yell.com and thomsonlocal.com In my view it is not worth paying significant amounts of money for directory listings just to improve your ranking in search results. If directories ask for a small contribution of around $10 to $20 for a listing or merely for a reciprocal link in exchange from your website, then this would be money and time well invested as long as the Page Rank of the directory is at 4 or above.  Having useful content on your website will naturally lead to links from other non-competing websites that want their visitors to share in this.

Build Backlinks

If you currently run one, you know just how difficult it can be to keep it updated on a timely basis.
